About Powers Clothing

We have sold Carhartt since 1892, making us the oldest dealer in the USA.

Our History

David L. Powers arrived in Jonesville to engage in the business of selling men's and boys clothing. David's father operated a store in Herricksville, Butler Township and he had brothers operating clothing stores in Union city and Sturgis. The year was 1890 and the Chicago Pike--Sauk Trail--was nothing more than a dirt trail.

The first 4 or 5 years of operation he moved several times within the business block until settling on the location of the store today. At the young age of 21, Ralph M. Powers was made a partner. Over the next 40 years, the store weathered two World Wars and a Great Depression. During this time, it was a father-and-son operation known as D.L. Powers & Son.

Monty Powers joined the store after serving as a pilot in World War II. Monty had plans for taking the business into a new era. A complete renovation of the interior and exterior was undertaken. It was one of the first businesses in the area to have air conditioning and carpeting. It had the appearance of a fine city store but never lost its desire to service the working men of the Jonesville area.

By the 1960's, Monty needed help and his brother-in-law, Ray Pope, joined him. Ray's son, David, also joined the store. A few years later, Monty's son Paul joined the store. Ray and Monty stepped down, which allowed David and Paul to take over the family business. David's children, Jim Pope and Marcy Boone, have joined the family business. Today, Marcy's daughter, Sara Sauber, has joined the business.
